Impact of retail centres in townships
Robert McGaffin, town planner and land economist and the property market theme coordinator for Urban LandMark, reports on a recent colloquium on the impact of retail centres in township areas.

Launch of Annual Report
Urban LandMark's latest Annual Report, to be launched this month, provides a broad overview of our programmes in - and positive impacts on - the urban land market sphere. We also make the outputs from our research and project activities available as learning material to enhance urban land market actors and practitioners' effective participation in this area.

Land security in southern Africa
The focus of Urban LandMark's work going forward to strengthen land security in rapidly urbanising cities and towns in the southern African region is residential, trading and productive land for the poor, and the impacts of other land actors on the poor's access to secure land.

Urban LandMark Regional Conference: Rethinking emerging land markets in rapidly growing southern African cities, 1-2 November 2010
The objective is to bring together key commentators on urban land issues in southern Africa (and beyond) to ascertain the state of knowledge on access to land and land markets by poor people, and build stronger links amongst practitioners and researchers.

The Battle for Johannesburg
The Battle for Johannesburg is a feature-length documentary film by Uhuru Productions that examines the conflicts and consequences of Johannesburg's rapid transformation in the 24 months leading up to the World Cup.

Tenure security and housing improvement in Buenos Aires
An article by Jean-Louis van Gelder, investigates the concept of tenure security and provides an empirical measurement of perceptions of security related to investment in housing improvement in Buenos Aires.

Upcoming LANDfirst learning events
LANDfirst is a pro-poor approach to land access that emphasises incremental development. It is also an emerging network of civil society organisations campaigning for dignity through land. A number of learning events have been planned to enable the different organisations in the network to learn from one another's experiences and about issues of mutual concern.

A new village region: Addressing 'rural sprawl'
In an article published in the June/July 2010 issue of The Transformer, Ronald Eglin argues that current expansion and densification trends in the Eastern Cape are leading to the erosion of the rural lifestyle aspired to by households in the region.
