Abahlali baseMjondolo
The Abahlali baseMjondolo (Shack Dwellers) Movement began in Durban, South Africa, in early 2005. The movement's key demand is for 'Land & Housing in the City' but it has also successfully politicised and fought for an end to forced removals and for access to education and the provision of water, electricity, sanitation, health care and refuse removal as well as bottom-up popular democracy.
Centre for Development and Enterprise (CDE)
An independent policy research and advocacy organisation, the CDE is one of South Africa's leading development think tanks, focusing on critical national development issues and their relationship to economic growth and democratic consolidation. CDE formulates practical policy proposals outlining ways in which South Africa can tackle major social and economic challenges.
Church Land Programme
The Church Land Programme is a South African non-governmental organisation that works with people, churches and land. It seeks to improve the lives of people involved with land issues and/or with church owned land, paying particular attention to women and the poorest. The programme promotes a just and moral land reform programme, helping the church and government to critically reflect and develop its relationship with the land and land-users.
Cities Alliance
The Cities Alliance is a global coalition of cities and their development partners, committed to scaling up successful approaches to poverty reduction. It brings cities together in a direct dialogue with bilateral and multilateral agencies and financial institutions, promotes the developmental role of local governments and helps cities of all sizes obtain more coherent international support. Cities Alliance also hosts much of Urban LandMark's material.
"eProp" - Your Commercial Property MarketPlace
eProp offers all stakeholders in the commercial property industry customised online products that facilitate the creation of a commercial property marketplace. A key principle of the initiative is the generation and dissemination of reliable property market data to the investment and broader business communities.
FinMark Trust
FinMark Trust aims to promote and support policy and institutional development to increase access to financial services by the un- and under-banked in Africa. Established in March 2002 with funding from the UK's Department for International Development (DFID), FinMark Trust is an independent trust whose business is controlled by five trustees from countries in southern Africa.
Global Land Tool Network
Initiated in 2006 by UN-HABITAT, in cooperation with the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the World Bank, the GLTN's main objective is to contribute to poverty alleviation and the achievement of Millennium Development Goals through land reform, improved land management and security of tenure.
International Land Coalition
In 2003, the Popular Coalition to Eradicate Hunger and Poverty was renamed the International Land Coalition (ILC), in recognition of its strategic focus on land access issues. Since 2003, ILC has grown to a coalition of 83 organisations in 40 countries, working together to promote secure and equitable access to land.
Land Portal
The Land Portal is an online tool designed to make finding, sharing and collaborating on land information easier and more effective. Ultimately the portal aims to improve transparency, land monitoring and the identification of information gaps to promote effective and sustainable land governance.
Lincoln Institute of Land Policy
The Lincoln Institute of Land Policy addresses issues involving the use, regulation and taxation of land. The institute improves the dialogue about urban development, the built environment, and tax policy in the United States and abroad. It aims to provide the highest quality, non-partisan analysis and evaluation for today's regulatory, planning, and policy decisions.
Local Governments for Sustainability
ICLEI provides technical consulting, training, and information services to build capacity, share knowledge and support local government in the implementation of sustainable development at the local level. The basic premise is that locally designed initiatives can provide an effective and cost-efficient way to achieve local, national and global sustainability objectives.

SHiFT: Social Housing Focus Trust
Established in 2000, SHiFT is a section 21 Company with section 18A status, aimed at creating sustainable communities that contribute to the transformation of the South African society. The organisation aims to critically engage with the social housing sector in South Africa by promoting an integrated approach to the planning and delivery of social housing.
Slum Dwellers International
Slum/Shack Dwellers International (SDI) is an alliance of country-level organisations of the urban poor from 33 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. SDI links poor urban communities from cities across the South to transfer and adapt the successful mobilisation, advocacy and problem solving strategies they develop in one location to other cities, countries and regions.
South African Cities Network
The South African Cities Network, an initiative of the Minister for Provincial and Local Government and nine city municipalities, in partnership with the South African Local Government Association (SALGA), encourages the exchange of information, experience and best practices on urban development and city management.
South African Property Owners Association (SAPOA)
SAPOA was established in 1966 by the leading property investment organisations to bring together all role players in the commercial property field and create a powerful platform for property investors. It is recognised as the representative body and official voice of the commercial and industrial property industry in South Africa, with a combined portfolio in excess of R150 billion. SAPOA members control approximately 90% of all commercial and industrial property in SA.
The South African Informal City
The SA Informal City project is an initiative of the Architects' Collective, which together with its partners, launched the project with an exhibition in 2011 of South Africa's most relevant and innovative design and research projects featuring explorations and interventions in the informal sector. The aim of the project is to open up dialogue and discussion around the critical issues of informality and urban development.
UN Habitat Land and Tenure Section
UN-HABITAT's Land and Tenure Section, established in May 1999, is the agency's focal point for land management and tenure systems, policies and legislation that help achieve adequate shelter, security of tenure and equal access to economic resources for all, with a specific focus on gender equality.
United Cities and Local Governments
UCLG represents and defends the interests of local governments on the world stage, regardless of the size of the communities they serve. Headquartered in Barcelona, the organisation's mission is to be the united voice and world advocate of democratic local self-government, promoting its values, objectives and interests, through cooperation between local governments, and within the wider international community.
Urban Land Institute
The Urban Land Institute is a nonprofit research and education organisation supported by its members. Founded in 1936, the institute has more than 40,000 members worldwide representing the entire spectrum of land use and real estate development disciplines, working in private enterprise and public service. The mission of the Urban Land Institute is to provide leadership in the responsible use of land and in creating and sustaining thriving communities worldwide.
The Brookings Institution
The Brookings Institution is a nonprofit public policy organisation based in Washington, DC.
