Urban LandMark Conference

Rethinking emerging land markets in rapidly growing southern African cities

1 & 2 November 2010, Johannesburg, South Africa

Home | About the venue | Registration | Themes | Programme/Presentations | Abstracts | Speaker biographies

The Urban Land Markets Programme of Southern Africa is hosting a regional conference in November to:

  • bring together key commentators on urban land issues in the region and beyond to ascertain the state of knowledge on poorer people's access to land and land markets; and
  • build stronger links amongst practitioners and researchers.

The event will be centred on three main themes, which will inform the scope of the discussions.

  • Theme 1: Recognising land rights - identifying alternative ways of recognising land rights
  • Theme 2: The political economy of urban land markets in Africa
  • Theme 3: Urban land governance

Although this conference focuses on southern Africa, a number of papers from other regions that are comparative and promote learning between countries and regions from the African continent will be presented.

Join discussion on South Africa's urban spatial development 16 years after democracy
Urban LandMark and the Mail & Guardian invite interested parties to a discussion event entitled 'Perfecting the apartheid city? interrogating South Africa’s urban spatial development 16 years after democracy'. Join the conversation as urban experts focus on these issues, and de bate alternatives for more inclusive, secure and productive South African cities. The discussion will take place on 1 November 2010 from 18:00 to 20:00 in The Forum Turbine Hall, Newtown, Johannesburg.

Launch of Affordable Land and Housing Data Centre
On the morning of Thursday 4 November, we will be launching a new initiative in Sandton, the Affordable Land and Housing Data Centre. This is a partnership initiative between Urban LandMark, FinMark Trust, Lightstone and Eighty20. If delegates are still in Johannesburg, please feel free to attend this event.
